No heat? Start here.
Five minutes of safe checks can bring the heat back, or tell us exactly what to bring. If it's cold and nothing below helps, call us.
Smell gas? Stop here.
Don't touch light switches, the thermostat or anything that could spark, and don't try to relight anything. Leave the house, then call your gas company or 911 from outside. We come after it's safe.
The checks, in order
1. The thermostat
Set to Heat, and a few degrees above the room temperature? A blank screen often means dead batteries: change them and wait five minutes.
2. The power
Look for a tripped breaker in the panel. Then find the boiler or furnace switch, often red, near the stairs or on the unit, and make sure it's on.
3. Boiler: the pressure gauge
When the boiler is cold, the gauge usually reads about 15. Much lower and the boiler may shut itself off to protect itself. Don't try to fill it if you're not sure how: call us.
4. Furnace: the filter
A clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut down. If it's grey and full, swap it, then turn the furnace off and on at its switch.
5. A light or a code
Many boilers and furnaces show a blinking light or an error code. Take a photo of it and of the unit's label: it tells us which parts to bring.
6. Only some rooms cold?
Check that the radiator valves or the room's vents are open, and that furniture isn't blocking them. Radiators that bang or stay cold at the top may need bleeding: we can show you how.
While you wait for us
A few things that keep a house warmer and safer until the heat is back.
- Close doors to rooms you don't use and keep everyone in one or two rooms.
- Keep curtains closed at night, open on sunny windows during the day.
- In a real freeze, open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so the pipes get some warm air.
- Use space heaters only as their label says, away from anything that burns, and never an oven or a grill to heat the house.
My heating systems power stopped 2 days before Christmas. Bogdan arrived after I called, same-day. He diagnosed the problem, ordered the replacement part and arrived less than 3 days later, the day after Christmas to install and fix the issue.
Still cold?
Call us and tell us what you saw: the gauge, the light, the code. It helps us bring the right parts the first time.
